Sightseeing

Sintra
Sintra is one of the portuguese towns elected by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, on account of its 19th century Romantic architecture. Made famous by Lord Byron, Sintra was once the royal town of Portugal. Many castles and palaces can be found in its vicinity, one of them being Pena Palace, perched atop a steep hill. Inspired by Neuschwanstein Castle, it is a yellow heap of small domes and turrets filled with a wide array of decorative arts. Unforgettable is the Sintra National Palace, whose white twin towers are the most distinctive landmark in Sintra, due to it’s combination of Moorish, Gothic and Manuelian styles. Inside you can find a beautiful collection of ancient and rare tiles and murals.
The Castelo dos Mouros, unlike the two palaces, is nowadays in ruins. The old battlements stretch for some way along a ridge and offer magnificent views of the town, Pena Palace and the area generally.
"I must just observe that the village of Sintra in Estremadura is the most beautiful in the world."  Lord Byron, 1809
Cabo da Roca
Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca) is the cape that forms the westernmost point of both mainland Portugal and mainland Europe. The cape is in the Portuguese municipality of Sintra, west of Lisbon district, and also forms the westernmost extent of the Serra de Sintra.
The lighthouse was completed in 1772, while the structure rises 144 meters in height above the cape. It’s lighthouse and a tourist shop sit on top of the cliff. Known to be a popular tourist attraction, the site features a monument with a crucifix bearing a Portuguese inscription, from one of our most renowned poets:
“Aqui, onde a terra se acaba e o mar começa...” Luís Vaz de Camões

(Here, where the land ends and the sea begins…)
